Eleven new industry and community leaders as well as a new dean representative join the board

The George Mason University Foundation is proud to announce the recent appointment of eleven new trustees to the board. The appointments were approved at the June 3, 2016, full board meeting. The trustees will begin their terms with the board effective July 1. The newest members represent both government and private business professionals, all committed to the continued success of George Mason University and its Faster Farther Campaign.

“The heart of our mission at the Foundation is to advance private philanthropic support for Mason,” said Janet Bingham, president of the George Mason University Foundation and vice president of the university’s Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations. “We have seen amazing successes in this realm just this past year, with transformative multimillion–dollar gifts toward scholarships and public service. Such developments would simply not be possible without the support and guidance of our Board of Trustees.”

“The philanthropic support provided through the George Mason University Foundation is absolutely key to our success in delivering on our mission of inclusive excellence,” said George Mason University President Ángel Cabrera. “I look forward to working closely with the new members as they help us establish an even stronger foundation to serve our students and our region, while producing the level of science and scholarship expected of a tier-one research university like ours.”

Joseph J. O’Brien was elected to serve as the new chairman of the board. Outgoing chairman James W. Hazel, JD ’84, will remain chair of the Faster Farther campaign.

“It is an honor to have the opportunity to work alongside Dr. Bingham, Dr. Cabrera, and their dynamic teams to advance Mason’s inspiring and important work across the region, nation, and world,” said O’Brien. “This is an exciting and important time for the university, and we are all thrilled that the Foundation has recruited such a distinguished group of leaders to serve on the Board of Trustees. Collectively they bring expertise in real estate, investment management, finance, and governance—but perhaps their greatest attributes are their ability to connect people and to make things happen. They are joining an outstanding group of current trustees and Foundation personnel who are working diligently to support and propel Mason initiatives both faster and farther.”
