School of Nursing students

George Mason University lost a valued member of its community recently when Joyce Gledhill, BS ’77, MSN ’88, a member of the first graduating class from the School of Nursing, passed away on January 17 in Arvada, Colorado.

A loyal alumna who was an annual fund donor to Mason for 33 consecutive years, Gledhill also has a special distinction in the school’s history. A talented artist, she designed the pin that is presented to each School of Nursing graduate at his or her convocation ceremony. The pin has been worn proudly by decades of Mason-educated nurses.

Gledhill already had a career as a loving parent to her children, David and Page, prior to arriving at Mason. After graduating she worked as an orthopedic nurse at Commonwealth Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia. Moving to Fair Oaks Hospital, she helped create and run the Chronic Pain Management Unit there for many years. In 2003 she moved to Colorado to be close to her family.

In her honor, the School of Nursing is establishing the Joyce A. Gledhill Scholarship Fund. Gledhill’s family has requested that those wishing to honor her can make donations in her memory to the school.
