George Mason University kicked off the 2024 holiday season celebrating longtime friends and loyal donors at the Winter Celebration of Giving reception, held in the Center for the Arts on the Fairfax Campus. “Your giving, your investment, and your engagement with George Mason students has helped a young person get a degree when without your support, it would not have happened,” said George Mason President Gregory Washington.
The event welcomed members of George Mason’s cumulative giving societies, including the Boxwood Society, Mason Society, and Commonwealth Society, as well as members of the Legacy Society—individuals who have included George Mason in their long-term financial or estate plans. These societies represent some of the university’s most generous donors, whose contributions have advanced the institution’s mission. Guests enjoyed a lively reception and dinner, while the George Mason Music Productions jazz trio played and the university’s leadership expressed its thanks.
“There is power behind your giving,” said Trishana E. Bowden, vice president of advancement and alumni relations and the president of the George Mason University Foundation. “Your support means more than just financial relief. It means opportunity: an opportunity for students to pursue their dreams and to focus on their studies without the weight of a financial burden.”
Brynne Severns, a rising senior and scholarship recipient, shared her personal journey with the guests, expressing her deep appreciation: “Thank you for believing in us, creating opportunities and reminding us what it means to give back,” she said. “You’re not just shaping our education; you’re shaping who we are and who we will become. Because of your generosity, we will not just dream of making a difference, we will go out and do it.”
Following the reception, many guests continued their evening with the George Mason Symphony Orchestra and Choirs Winter Festival concert. Bowden concluded the event by emphasizing the sincere gratitude at its heart. “Thank you for believing in the mission of this university,” she said. “Thank you for investing in the dreams of our students and the future of our institution.”
