Construction is underway on a dedicated practice facility for the men’s and women’s basketball teams, thanks to a leadership gift of $275,000 from Mason supporter Kathy McKay and her family, and commitments from other loyal Patriots donors.
In gratitude, the basketball practice court as well as a locker at EagleBank Arena will be named for the McKay family.
Construction at the Recreation Athletic Complex (RAC) began on June 1. The improvements are a key part of phase I of Mason’s Basketball Excellence Plan to enhance recruiting and student-athlete development. The plan also includes a complete overhaul of the team locker rooms at EagleBank Arena, and is an important step toward making Mason an attractive destination for top recruits.
“In the basketball-driven Atlantic 10 Conference, it is imperative that our basketball teams have a dedicated space to develop and compete,” said Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Brad Edwards. “Although we haven’t yet realized the entire fundraising goal, we have hit the threshold to begin construction, which is more than 50 percent of the total budget.”
The cage gym in the RAC will undergo a comprehensive, $1 million renovation that includes installing new top-quality hardwood courts, new lighting, six basketball goals, video capabilities and George Mason Patriots branding.
The approximately $15 million Basketball Excellence Plan is part of the Athletics Department’s strategic vision, which aims to strengthen financial resources and generate new revenue streams while extensively improving facilities and fostering student-athlete success.
Phase II of the Basketball Excellence Plan will consist of complete design and construction of an addition to the practice facility, including adding locker rooms, training and sports medicine performance areas, and offices for the coaching staffs.
